The Magento 1 End Of Life Countdown Is On ©BigCommerce

Magento 1 End of Life – The Countdown Begins

Back in April 2017, Magento announced that Magento 1 would no longer be supported in the future. With an end of life (EOL) date in June 2020, most people did not think about it for long and thought they had enough time to think about alternative. Well, that time has now come. Don’t worry, there’s still some leeway to decide on the next steps, and we have all the information you need to do so.

EOL – Key Things To Know

Whether you decide to migrate to Magento 2 or a new e-commerce platform provider, you’ll be going through a complete re-platforming. With this step-by-step guide, you can see what this will look like. If you don’t switch, your online store will no longer be supported by security updates after June 2020. This puts you, your online shop, and your customers’ data at risk. After the EOL date your site will no longer be PCI DSS compliant, raising concerns with your payment provider. This could finally lead to them dropping you. You can find more details here.

You might think that it would be relatively easy to switch from Magento 1 to Magento 2. However, this could be a bit more complicated than expected. As mentioned above, this is still a complete re-platform. This means that your themes can’t be transferred easily, your M1 extensions don’t work and some of your data has to be migrated manually. As M1 and M2 have a different architecture, this is not just a simple upgrade.

Another approach would be a complete platform change, and BigCommerce could be the answer. Since humans are creatures of habit, you probably think that you might as well stay with the platform you are used to. But before you decide, you should take a look at some important key comparisons.

  • Easy To Set Up
BigCommerce works seamlessly with a wide range of enterprise grade apps that can be installed with just one click. 96% of their merchants migrate from their existing platform within 2-4 months.
  • Spend Less
At 1/4 of the cost of Magento, BigCommerce has no hosting or maintenance costs while Magento hosting usually costs four figures per month and can increase dramatically during the holiday season. BigCommerce offers lower operating costs with advanced features including more security, speed, and fraud protection.
  • Server Uptime
BigCommerce offers 99.98% server uptime and ensures that your business is running and orders are processed even during peak season.
